Husband and wife make their dreams of home ownership a reality

Husband and wife Alice and Daniel Milner weren’t even planning on buying a new home but Help to Buy changed all that.

“As soon as we drove onto the site we fell in love,” Alice says. “We’re quite outdoorsy so the fact it was surrounded by fields really appealed to us, and the location meant we would be closer to my parents too. It ticked all the boxes.”

Alice explains, “We’ve been renting for 6 years and weren’t planning to buy. I knew a little bit about Help to Buy so I thought it would be a good opportunity to see what our options were.”

Through the Help to Buy scheme, you only need to raise a 5% deposit and can access the support of up to 20% in the form of an equity loan from the Government. There’s nothing to pay on the loan for 5 years as it is interest free until year 6.

Alice says, “It was really great to have people to talk to about Help to Buy and to see all the upcoming developments in our area. The mortgage advice was so helpful too, we were able to sit down with an adviser one-on-one and assess our affordability so we knew what was in our price range.”

Alice explains, “Once we decided to go ahead we knew we had to get the money together for the deposit so we moved in with Daniel’s parents in order to save. Even though we’re back living at home, Help to Buy has made it a lot easier for us and means we’ll have our deposit much quicker.”

She goes on further to say, “We were renting an old cottage which had damp, and because I have asthma it was making me ill. So I’m really looking forward to moving into a brand new house!”

Teachers take first step onto property ladder in South Yorkshire

Primary school teachers Matthew Walker and Alice Clark, both 24, bought their three bedroom house near Doncaster through the government’s Help to Buy scheme.

“We’re happy to be somewhere we feel we can settle in for the long-term, rather than moving in a few years,” says Matthew.

The couple, both originally from the area, heard about the scheme through Matthew’s parents, who recommended it after Matthew’s sister had looked into it when buying a house in Cambridge. They used a 20% equity loan under the Help to Buy scheme along with a deposit from their own savings and inheritance, and arranged a five-year fixed rate mortgage with Santander through London & Country Mortgages, their independent mortgage adviser.

“This is a house we’ll be able to grow into,” says Matthew. “We were fortunate with the deposit in that I’d inherited some money from both sets of grandparents, but Help to Buy has made it possible to buy a home that is more spacious than we thought we’d be able to afford.”

They chose their semi-detached townhouse for the space it gave them, and because it is near family and friends.

Small deposit allows Louise onto the property ladder

Louise Highton, 26 bought her three-bed home in York in May, just a year after finishing university, with the low deposit enabling her to take her first steps on the property ladder.

Help to Buy agents visited Louise at her home to chat about her Help to Buy experience.

First time buyer makes his dreams of home ownership a reality

After taking advantage of the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, David Granat has moved into his own converted two bedroom apartment at The Garden Quarter, Caversfield.

David, a 23 year old electrical engineer originally from Wallingford, Oxfordshire was living with his parents until he saw the City & Country development advertised online. He immediately fell in love with his quirky two-bedroom, ground floor apartment and the Help to Buy scheme gave him the ability to put in an offer immediately and ultimately secure his dream home.

David said Help to Buy helped him buy at the right time:

“Having lived at home with my parents I was very much looking forward to the time when I would be able to move out and buy my own property. Thanks to the Help to Buy scheme, this came a lot sooner than I had anticipated and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”

David chose to buy his home at The Garden Quarter because it’s a unique development. David said:

“Each property has its own individual characteristics; no two are exactly the same. I was looking for something special and The Garden Quarter really is a one of a kind development.

“It’s such an honour to have the opportunity to live in a Grade II listed building and own my own piece of history.”

Teacher learns joy of home ownership thanks to Help to Buy

Help to Buy scheme has helped to give primary school teacher Catherine Hegarty the opportunity to move into her first home in Scarborough.

Launched in January, Help to Buy gives home buyers the opportunity to purchase a property with a deposit of just 5%. And it was this opportunity that first time buyer Catherine, a primary school teacher in Scarborough, took advantage of.

Currently living with her parents, she has bought a new four bed, terraced house and has already started to re-decorate before she completes her first move.

Catherine said the Help to Buy scheme ticked all the boxes for her:

“Buying a house with a deposit of 5% meant I could afford a better house, which is great for me as a first time buyer. Saving for a deposit is hard but because I only needed 5% it meant that I could spend more of my savings on the essentials, like furniture and everything I needed to re-decorate” said Catherine.

“The process of going through the scheme was really easy – a lot easier than I thought it would be. In the end I managed to complete the whole process within four weeks and now I have my own place, so everything has worked out really nicely for me personally.”

Michelle took out her mortgage with Lloyds Bank. Commenting on the scheme, Marc Page, Mortgages Director at the bank said:

“Help to Buy addresses some of the real problems that prospective home buyers might face. It’s great to see first time buyers like Catherine going through the scheme and getting the keys to their new home.”
